- Wear your backpack properly. We are most familiar with back pain for adults, but it is becoming more common in children and teens, too. One way to combat this is for your student to properly wear their backpack. Additionally, wearing their backpack properly is important for spinal health. Though it may be “cool” to wear it on just one shoulder, it can cause misalignment in their spine and back pain. Use both straps and adjust them to fit snugly around your student’s shoulders. The backpack should not droop below your belt line. You also want to be sure that the backpack weighs no more than 5-10% of your student’s weight. If it weighs more than this, your student will tend to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back, rather than on the shoulders, by the straps. For more backpack safety information and tips on how to purchase the right backpack, head over to the American Chiropractic Association
- Properly Read Books or TabletsWhile it’s great that students are receiving tablets to alleviate heavy books, this now brings a new problem – they are staring down at a screen. Most likely they are sitting with improper posture as their head tilts forward and goes over the top of their shoulders (something we call “text neck”).Students should be cognizant of their posture as they are reading a tablet or book. One way to help with this is to make sure that your student’s tablet (or textbook) is in a stand that tilts toward them and that their head doesn’t tilt over their shoulders. By keeping proper posture and taking breaks to rest their eyes, students can alleviate headaches and other issues.Learn more about text neck here.
- Sit Up Straight. When students are sitting at their desk at school, they need to keep proper posture. To sit correctly at a desk, students should:
- Keep feet flat on the floor
- Shoulders back
- Head over top of their neck
- Neck over top of their shoulders
- Keep books or tablets at eye level
14JunWe are excited to now offer treatment for peripheral neuropathy at Fredericksburg Chiropractic!
What is peripheral neuropathy?According to WebMd, it is “the conditions that result when nerves that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord from and to the rest of the body are damaged or diseased.”
Symptoms & Causes of NeuropathyThe most common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include: tingling, burning sensation in the feet or hands, numbness, and loss of sensation in the arms and legs. There can be many causes to this nerve damage in the body. “Diabetes, chemo-induced neuropathy, hereditary disorders, inflammatory infections, auto-immune diseases, exposure to toxic chemicals (toxic neuropathy), and poor nutrition,” are a few of the causes listed by the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy. The cause varies from patient to patient, but we must discover this in order to help the nerves heal.
Treatment for NeuropathyChiropractic treatment for neuropathy can help alleviate symptoms and work to heal the damaged nerves that are causing neuropathy. Rather than taking medications to mask the pain and symptoms, chiropractic care looks for the source of the problem. Our care aims to improve your overall health and any other health ailments that induce neuropathy.
Neuropathy chiropractic care includes:
- Increasing blood flow to the nerves
- Optimize the environment within the body for nerve healing.
- Stimulates damaged nerves (small fiber, large diameter, or motor nerves) to reduce pain and improve balance.
- Decrease brain-based pain.
What is Text Neck?Have you heard the term “text neck” before? We’re sure that you can get the idea from the term itself, but according to Spine Health it is the “neck pain and damage sustained from looking down at your cell phone, tablet, or other wireless devices too frequently and for too long.” In today’s digital age, everyone is attached to some sort of device. You would be hard pressed to find someone who isn’t looking down at a device the next time you are out to eat, riding in a car or plane, or even walking down the street. Recent studies show that the average person spends three hours on their phone per day – whether that is from texting, emailing, calling, social media, or other usage. Why is that a problem? According to the Washington Post, the human head weighs an average of 12 pounds. When you bend your neck forward and face down, the weight put onto your cervical spine increases. Ideally the head sits directly over the spine and its structure can handle that weight. With the neck at a 45 degree angle and the head forward, the head actually has a felt weight of 49 pounds. Now this isn’t a new phenomenon. People have spent years looking down at books and newspapers, reading, and other work. The issue is that with our digital devices, people are spending more time and longer periods of time with their head and neck tilted down looking at devices. There can be a concern for neck and back pain due to text neck. It is especially concerning for younger people as they are accustomed to this and it can cause permanent damage and issues for years to come if not properly mitigated and treated.
Symptoms of Text NeckMost commonly, symptoms of text neck will be neck pain and soreness. Other symptoms may include:
- Upper back pain, including chronic to sharp pain
- Upper back spasms
- Shoulder pain and tightness
- Headaches and migraines

Types of Chiropractic CareToday we want to inform you on three of our most common chiropractic treatments: chiropractic manual manipulation, electronic stimulation, and intersegmental traction.
Chiropractic Manual ManipulationThis is the most common treatment and what most people think of when they think of seeing a chiropractor. This is often referred to as your adjustment. The doctors may use their hands or a small device known as an activator to perform your adjustment. The purpose of adjustments are to realign joint subluxations, also known as restrictions. Three common adjusting techniques used include Gonstead, Diversified, and Thompson. These are tried and true techniques which chiropractors have used for decades. Our chiropractors couple these skills along with the latest research to provide the utmost care to our patients.
Electronic Stimulation (E-Stim)E-stim is administered to patients when they have very spastic muscles. The electrical impulses cause the muscles to repeatedly fire. These repeated muscular contractions in turn fatigue the muscles. When the muscles fatigue, it allows them to relax from their previous state of contraction which often takes pressure off the nerves that are causing the felt pain. The electrical stimulation is typically administered for 10 minutes prior to chiropractic treatments. The relaxed muscles will help the manual manipulation adjustment go smoother.
Intersegmental TractionIntersegmental traction or mechanical traction is often administered after an adjustment. The mechanical traction is a way to aid in joint mobility. After the chiropractic adjustment the patient lays on an intersegmental traction table which rolls up and down the axial spine. The rolling action helps induce motion back into the spinal joints as the machine rises on its Y axis while tractioning the spine on its X axis. Patients often describe the intersegmental traction table as a massage table. As a patient of Fredericksburg Chiropractic, you may be advised to have one of or a combination of these or our other treatments. 24AprA question we often hear at Fredericksburg Chiropractic is, “What exactly is chiropractic treatment?” Chiropractic treatment has been growing in popularity to treat a variety of conditions other than the typical back or neck pain. Today, we’d like to share with you a bit more about what exactly chiropractic treatment is.
What is Chiropractic Care?Chiropractic is, “a healthcare profession that focuses on the spine and other joints of the body, and their connection to the nervous system,” according to Palmer College of Chiropractic (Dr. McKinney’s alma mater!). Many people think that chiropractic care can only help them if they have an injured back or back pain. However, chiropractic care can help with so much more than that! As mentioned above, we focus on how the spine and joints of the body connect to the nervous system. So, if you have been suffering from headaches, anxiety, hip or leg pain, or other issues, chiropractic care is here to help you by restoring your body to its natural functionality. When your nervous system function is improved, your entire body will operate a higher level.
Common Chiropractic Care & BenefitsThe most common chiropractic care is chiropractic adjustments. This is when the doctor applies a controlled force to a joint. This will restore function and mobility to your joints and body. The chiropractic adjustments are completed by hand or with the assistance of a small tool called an activator. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, our chiropractors offer a variety of other treatments and will gladly provide you with advice on other lifestyle changes. Some of the additional treatments offered at Fredericksburg Chiropractic include e-stimulation, nutrition, and orthotics. Simply put, chiropractic care is a more natural remedy to the problems you may be facing in your body. Our chiropractors work with you on a whole-body wellness approach. This means you can get out of pain quickly, while avoiding drugs or surgery. If you want to learn more or are ready to book a consultation, contact us today!
